Camera Obscura

There’s a huge free camera obscura by the ocean front in Santa Monica, I’ve heard about it a lot but never actually been there until today. It’s really cool, it’s like watching a live 8mm film. They should trim down some trees though so we could get a better view of the beach.

Had lunch out on the Santa Monica Pier and tried to catch a glimpse of some dolphins.

Culver City Art Walk

I heard through the grape wines that it was the Culver City Art Walk today so me and Mika headed over to the Art District. We did a pit stop at Cool Haus. I’ve heard of this place and seen their ice cream truck driving around but I’ve never actually been. They do all sorts of weird flavored ice cream, but I’m not that adventurous when it comes to my ice cream so I stuck with the salted chocolate.

It’s been a while since I was in the Art District of Culver City but the art walk made me rediscover and re-appreciate. It’s pretty cool, I wanna spend more time here!

I don’t really understand this type of art;

I had Mika stand next to this installation to show how big it is, or how tiny Mika is.

Went for a drink at the Jazz bar, they have live music every night, fantastic!

Moved on to the bar across the street to play some pool.

 A slightly confusing sign;

Back to school

I’ve been wanting to take the package design class at UCLA Extension for many years and I asked my boss if he would pay for it. He was happy to, so I’m back in school.
I feel like I might be a little over qualified for this class but its still mostly fun and inspirational.
Today however, I don’t wanna be in school, I just wanna go ski. Also, Starbucks can never get my name right.

Pasadena Designer Con

Went to Designer Con in Pasadena.

Found Martin!

It was a lot of people there and I got tired, but we saw Barrel Man! Apparently this is a big thing in the Philippines and can be found in touristy gift shops etc. Adorable!

Hello Shitty Museum

I had really no desire to go to the Hello Kitty exhibit at the Japanese American National Museum, but then I got an invite for the opening day, so why not.

A replica of the first Hello Kitty item that was put out on the market.

Martin with his painting.

Pomaire and Valparaiso

No skiing today, just road-tripping and sightseeing.
We thought we’d get an early start, but missed that the garage where we had our car didn’t open until 9am on weekends so we had an hour to kill. Nothing opens until 9am, so we just walked around for a while.
Interesting art on the pavement.

Finally got our car out and headed to Pomaire, 40 minutes east of Santiago. The overcast made us feel good about taking a day off sightseeing instead of skiing.

A bartender a couple nights ago told us about Pomaire, a tiny town with tons of pottery. Since we were super early, we got there before everything open up.

Watch your head if you are over 5 feet tall.

They love avocados so much here that they named a street after them.

After we learned about O’Higgins in Rancagua, we have been a little obsessed by him.

Around noon more stores started to open up, we kind of figured that it was in the middle of the winter and probably not the peak season for them. The owners is probably at home playing video games.

I wanted one of these piggy banks, but I don’t want to have to break it to get my money out.

Very awesome empanada for lunch!

When we felt we had seen Pomaire, we made our way over to Valparaiso. The driver said he needed to pull over to “take a leak”. I asked him to stop somewhere with a nice view so I could take photos.

Thank You!

Valparaiso is the second largest city in Chile, located on a hill off the coast. Kind of the San Fransisco of California.

We had an ice cream and headed back to Barrio Bellavista for dinner and our last night out.

This might be the worst designed restroom in a bar I have seen. As you walk through the door you immediately have to take a step up to get to the toilets. I wonder how many drunk girls miss that step and fall head first into the toilet bowl.

We were pretty stoked that we stayed up close to 1am, until we walked by this huge line to get into the nightclub… We were ready to hit the bed while everyone else just got in line to continue party for another 4 hours.

Since I don’t have the patient to stop for a second and put the letters in the correct order when I read things, I thought this guy was promoting his album Retardo Iluminado.

This painting outside out room has been creeping me out the last few nights.
