Winding Way Trail Hike

We hiked the Winding Way Trail up to the Escondido Falls in Malibu.

I think we are all somewhat out of shape after a long winter, the mile long paved path up the hill was the most tiresome, it was nice when it started to go downhill again.

First quarter of the trail was pretty easy, first water break before the steep climbing started;

Some thoughtful soul had put up ropes for an easier hike, it was some serious climbing, not an easy hike!

We made it to the Escondido Falls, time for a beer and fruit break!

Where does all the water come from?

While climbing up I thought it’d be even worst going down, but it was actually not that bad. The ropes definitely helped though!

We stopped by Malibu Seafood on the way home, how come I didn’t know about this place? Amazing food and “bring your own booze”!

I had fried scallops and fries. I wanna come back for more!

Temescal Canyon Hike

A few years ago I used to do a ton of hikes, sometimes two hikes a week. Then I got lazy and everyone got busy with their lives. I really wanna get back into hiking… I started off with keeping it local on the west side with Temescal Canyon.

It’s winter and it’s supposed to be nice and green, but we are still in a serious draught.

The Dreaded Stairs

I got annoyed last weekend when my legs got tired from skiing. I have to work on those muscles…

Los Angeles is so dry! It’s supposed to be all green this time of the year!

Hiking Buzzards Roost Loop in Big Sur

After 12 years of being unhappy with my sleeping bag and 2 years of seriously considering getting a new one, I finally bought a new monster warm one as we stopped by Big 5 on the way up to Big Sur. I was super excited and was so bummed when I woke up in the middle of the night as my feet were still bloody cold! But made some re-arrangements and managed to fall back to sleep. I woke up again around 7am and heard people putting on the fire. Brilliant, I’ll just stay here a little bit longer so they really get the fire going and I don’t have to do the work! At least so I thought. The nature was eventually calling and I had to get up. Once I got up the fire was almost dead, they didn’t get it to light properly… I think I’m gonna have to do a tutorial on how to put on a camp fire. It’s not that difficult people, non of that tepee nonsense,  got to stack them Jenga style, works every time!

It took some time to round up everyone and for all of us to get warm in our cloths, but eventually thought we were ready for a stroll in the wood.

Amazing Redwoods!

Beer and orange break on top of the mountain, we can see the ocean from here!

We made it back to camp about 3 hours later.

Hiking Will Roger’s

I have not been hiking in a long time, and what’s a better way to beat a jet lag then to go hiking?

Clouds look a little angry, but we were spared from rain.

The post hike beer and burger at City Tavern was awesome!

Verdugo Mountains Hike

We did our first hike in a very long time, in the Verdugo Mountains in Glendale. Yay, Mountain Lions!

We had not hiked for very long before we had to make our first decision…

We picked the northbound and came across this tree that had fallen over in the wind, we stopped for a moment and were debating if we should bring it with us home and use as a Christmas Tree, but we decided not to.

As we stood there making up our minds a few other hikers passed us by and we decided it was for the better to ask for directions right away so we wont get lost like on pretty much all the other hikes we are doing.

Turned out, it was pretty much straight up and it looped around. We said we’ll see if we’ll loop around or just hike straight up for an hour or so and then just turn around home.

We reached this, erhm, thing, after about 90 minutes and thought that was enough and turned around home.
Going back down is a lot easier and quicker!
We stopped by the ‘Christmas Tree’ again to pick up some decorations for the home.

Brilliant solution if there’s a bunch of people who need to have access to a locked gate, just bring your own lock!

Backbone Trail Hike

Another great day for hiking, we hit up the Backbone Trail in Topanga Canyon.

We were a little confused as to how long the hike would be as some sources said 2.5 miles, and others said 8 miles.  It came clear to us quickly though that it was gonna be uphill the entire time until it was time to turn around back home.

After about an hour of hiking, we decided that it was an 8 mile hike. It was nice and shady for the most part and the uphill part wasn’t that difficult at all.

It was a great hike, we didnt quite make it all the way up to the top, but did a good 2 hours and 45 minutes uphill before heading back down.

Circle Ranch Grotto Trail Hike

It’s always nice to do a hike the day after eating enough food that would feed a small village, it makes me feel a little better.

We saw this ladybird at the biginning of our hike, thinking it was cute, but isn’t it too cold and rainy for ladybirds?

It’s been raining a whole bunch lately, so the trail was muddy.

We had to cross a stream a few times, I dont know what I was thinking cos I knew we were supposed to see a waterfall, but I was not prepared for water…

We bumped into a bunch of ladybirds, and thought it was kind of cool.

Then we looked around and realized we were in the middle of a ladybird invasion, they were everywhere!

I thought it was a little freaky and got uncomfortable after a while. Now I think I understand why Americans call them ladybugs.

We asked the ranger later and it turned out the ladybirds migrates here every year to hang out.

Enough with the ladybugs, we had a hike to do. Had to cross the stream again, lot of water! Water is fun to take photos of!

I think it was around here that I slipped and got a wet foot.

They were everywhere, I’m serious!

Except for my wet foot, we all managed to stay clean and dry up until the very last stretch!

Deer Valley Loop Take 3

I had Friday off so I thought it was a good idea to hike off the turkey dinner I had last night.

Sostomo Trail was again the target and the Deer Valley Loop that we never reached last time.

A few months ago when we did this hike it was super hot, today was nice and chill!

We made it to the loop!
Snack break at the top before the descend started.
View over the Santa Monica Bay
Malibu

Escondido Canyon Trail

It was really a perfect day for hiking today, sun was shining, but it was not so hot! Fall hikes are the best!

It started out as an easy hike with not a lot of elevation gain, and the lush trees helped us stay away from the sun.

It didnt take us very long before we reached the waterfall, there’s probably more water during the winter and spring…

Water and snack break!
Once we found the waterfall, it started to get a lot trickier, with a narrow and steep path, a little bit of a challenge.

Yup, it got pretty steep after a while!

We could have hiked all the way up there,

but everyone was not comfortable with it, so we went back down instead and decided to go back one day without telling anyone…

Detours are fun!

The last stretch before heading for our lunch stop for the day where we probably ate twice as much calories than we burned during the hike.
