Hello Shitty Museum

I had really no desire to go to the Hello Kitty exhibit at the Japanese American National Museum, but then I got an invite for the opening day, so why not.

A replica of the first Hello Kitty item that was put out on the market.

Martin with his painting.

Sunday

The Culver City 5k was today, I was considering running it, but then I got lazy. I headed over to Copenhagen to pick up some pastries for breakfast instead.

Watched the first football game of the day and then off to LACMA to check out the Van Gogh to Kandinsky exhibit.

The Autry Museum

I didn’t actually know this museum existed, turns out it was awesome!

They have some really cool stuff, and the topic is super interesting, I feel like they could’ve done a better job with the lighting and the display of the items though.
Mmm, this is supposed to be Michael Jackson;

Stuff from JosĂ© Santos SepĂșlveda, one of the first LA County Sheriff’s. I always wondered what Sepulveda came from.

I didn’t have a ton of time to spend at the museum, so I would like to go back and explore more!

Last First Friday

It was the last First Friday of the season at the Natural History Museum tonight. It was an indoor-outdoor event this time.

I’ve seen the What Made LA exhibit before, but every time I go I discover something different. I’ve seen this big birds nest before and wondered what it was, but never actually looked it up. It turns out it was used as a food storage.

This part of Beverly Hills looks like a lady!

A map over the old Pacific Electric Railway. Everyone in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills excluded, wishes this system was still in place.

The Power of Photography: National Geographic 125 Years

After the hike and a nap, we headed over to the Annenberg Space for Photography as they have the NatGeo 125 Years of Photography exhibit on display.

No photos were allowed inside the museum, but it was very inspiring and it reminded me of why I like photography so much.
They had a photo booth outside. A good opportunity to make a fool of yourself!

Washington D.C Day Two

There’s a ton of free museums in Washington DC and everyone has their own favorite. People kept telling me to go to The Smithsonian, but The Smithsonian is actually about 20 different museums so when I got to DC I just walked around to see what seemed interesting.
I decided I wanted to see those important documents that stated that “This is our country now, whoever was here before can bugger off!” – Also known as the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights. I figured they would be in the National Archives Museum.

There were no photos allowed, but I could not resist. They are in there!

Beer lunch, hell yeah! I miss these old Brit like, not dive like, pubs – I wish we had more of them in Los Angeles.

My feet were still super tired today from all the walking yesterday. I kept walking today, but a lot slower and with a lot of breaks. There’s always something to look at though, so that’s cool!

Memorials everywhere! The Jefferson Memorial;

The Cherry Blossom Festival started today, but it’s been so cold on the east coast so the blossoms were not out yet. This is all supposed to be pink… I’ll have to come back some other year to check them out.

Kind of knackered I felt it was time to head back, have a beer and fall asleep early, but then I walked by the National Museum of American History and felt I should pop my head in and see what it was all about.

They had the vey first Star Spangled Banner on display which was cool, but then I got to tired and fed up with America that I had to leave. A beer was definitely over due.

I figured one thing out over the past two days; if a building has pillars, it probably means it is important.

Washington D.C

I got into Washington DC at 8am and it felt like I walked about 100 miles throughout the day. I started off with the Capitol Building.

These two R’n’B singers win! They were recording a music video. I don’t think I need to do anymore sightseeing today, nothing will top this!

I heard you might be able to go inside, but I could not be bothered researching that, I felt there was so much to do anyway. Off to the Washington Monument I went.
“Off course the have to renovate it now, when I’m here” I thought as I saw it had turned into a construction site. I later learned it was damaged from the 5.8 earthquake in 2011. So, fair enough…

A glimpse of the White House, but I’ll get back to that later.

The Lincoln Memorial was crowded! A few busloads of school kids must just have arrived.

They had drained the Reflecting Pool, but I could still see some reflection!

I’ve always found the Lincoln Memorial a little creepy. Why does he have to be so huge like? Sitting on his throne looking out over the people.

After the creepy Lincoln, I headed over to Georgetown. The old part of town. I had made my research before hand and learned that Baked & Wired was the best place to find delicious baked goods. There were a huge line out the door when I arrived, and I got a little stressed and disappointed. All I could see was cupcakes. I’ve never been a big fan of cupcakes. I wanted a cream pie, not a stupid cupcake. I couldn’t find anything on the menu that really looked appealing to me, so I just grabbed a gluten free chocolate cupcake, that surprisingly was really good. Coffee was pretty good as well. As I had my coffee and cupcake I finally saw where they were hiding their pies – under the counter! What the hell!

I liked Georgetown a lot, super cute old buildings.

Washington DC has this awesome bike share system, you pay $7 for 24h and you get to use a bike as much as you want. There’s hubs all over the city where you can park your bike and pick up a new one. Brilliant system, I want Los Angeles to adapt this as well!

By 4pm I was already exhausted from all the walking, but I made it to the real reason I came to Washington DC. I had an appointment with Sweden.

After being laugh at by the Swedish ambassador due to my Justin Bieber haircut on the 5 year old documents, I made it out of there. The first beer of the day was way overdue!

I was gonna meet my friend at 7pm in Chinatown, 2.5 miles away from where I was. I was tired, but had plenty of time, so I kept walking.

I walked by the White House, the light from the sunset was really nice.

The White House seem a lot smaller than I was expecting. We have bigger houses than that in Los Angeles, haha!

I walked by the Capitol City Brewing Company. I had to stop in for a beer.

Back to Chinatown!

First Friday March

We attend First Friday at the Natural History Museum quite frequently, but we are always so busy chatting away that we never really pay attention to the museum and the exhibits. I tend to always get lost in there as well. I wanna check out the dinosaurs but always end up in the creepy bird room.

I’ve been wanting one of these cups ever since I first was served coffee in one, about 18 months ago. I knew the store at the NHM had them so todayI finally bought one. I made use of it right away and pored some rum in it. It was right around here that we made plans to wake up at 5am to go skiing tomorrow.
